Worcester Marriage Records - Intentions and Licenses

In Massachusetts, "marriage intentions" is the official term for the license application process. Both parties must file their intentions with the clerk before the wedding. This step starts the required 3-day waiting period under MGL c. 207, § 28. Both people must appear in person at the Worcester City Clerk office. The license fee is $40.

The city's intentions page at worcesterma.gov marriage intentions has instructions on what to bring and what to expect. The screenshot below shows that page.

The intentions form captures both parties' names, addresses, dates of birth, and other required details. Once filed, the 3-day waiting period begins. The license is then valid for 60 days. If the ceremony does not take place within that window, you must apply again.

Both applicants must be at least 18 years old under MGL c. 207, § 7. No residency requirement applies. Couples from outside Worcester, and even outside Massachusetts, can get a license at this office as long as both parties appear in person.

After a marriage takes place, the officiant files the completed license with the Worcester City Clerk. That record becomes the official marriage certificate. Certified copies are available from the clerk's office and from the state.

In Worcester, certified copies cost $12 each for in-person requests. Mail requests cost $14 per copy. The city's certificate page at worcesterma.gov marriage certificates has the request form and full instructions. The screenshot below shows that page.

Worcester Historical Marriage Records

Worcester's marriage records stretch back to 1686, when the area was still a small colonial town. Records from 1686 to 1847 are in the original town books. City records begin in 1848 when Worcester became a city. These older records are a rich resource for genealogical research.

The Massachusetts State Archives holds statewide vital records from 1841 to 1930. Their address is 220 Morrissey Boulevard in Boston, phone 617-727-2816. Certified copies cost $3 each. Search the online database at sec.state.ma.us vital records search. FamilySearch also indexes Massachusetts vital records from 1841 to 1915 for free. For records from 1931 to the present, the Massachusetts RVRS at 150 Mount Vernon Street in Dorchester handles certified copies. Their fees are $20 in person, $32 by mail, and $54 through VitalChek.

Two Worcester-area institutions are useful for older genealogical research. The American Antiquarian Society at 185 Salisbury Street in Worcester holds one of the largest collections of early American printed material in the country. Their website is at americanantiquarian.org. The Worcester Historical Museum at 30 Elm Street also has local archives that may contain marriage-related records from earlier periods.

If you need records from before 1841, the city clerk's pre-1841 books and church records are your most likely sources. Many early Worcester marriages were recorded in Congregational or other Protestant church registers. These are sometimes available through the American Antiquarian Society or on microfilm.

State Resources for Worcester Marriages

The Massachusetts RVRS is the main state agency for vital records. Their main site is at mass.gov RVRS. The RVRS holds records from 1931 to the present for all Massachusetts cities and towns including Worcester. You can order certified copies through them for marriages that happened from 1931 onward.

The state also provides a guide for couples who want to get married. It covers the license process, waiting periods, and what to expect. You can find it at mass.gov getting married guide. The full text of Massachusetts marriage law is in MGL Chapter 207. The law covers age requirements, prohibited marriages, the waiting period, and how the license process works across all cities and towns in the state.
