Cambridge Marriage Records Lookup
Cambridge marriage records go back to the 1630s, when the city was first settled as a colonial town. The Cambridge City Clerk handles all marriage licenses, intentions, and certificates for the city. You can apply for a marriage license, request certified copies of marriage certificates, and register domestic partnerships through the same office. The Cambridge City Clerk is open six days a week, including Monday evenings and Friday mornings, making it easier to visit without taking a full day off work.
Cambridge Overview
Cambridge City Clerk Office
The Cambridge City Clerk is the official keeper of all marriage records in the city. The office is in Room 103 at Cambridge City Hall on Massachusetts Avenue. Staff here issue marriage licenses, record completed marriages, and provide certified copies of marriage certificates. The office also handles domestic partnership registrations, which are filed through the same desk.
Cambridge has extended hours compared to many other Massachusetts city clerks. Monday hours run until 8:00 PM, which is useful for people who work standard business hours. Friday hours end at noon. If you plan to visit, check the day and time carefully. The office is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Getting a Cambridge Marriage License
Both parties must appear in person at the Cambridge City Clerk to apply for a marriage license. You do not have to live in Cambridge. No residency requirement applies. The license fee is $35. This is one of the lower license fees among Massachusetts cities. Certified copies of marriage certificates cost $15 each. If you need additional copies during the same transaction, each one costs $6.
Massachusetts law requires a 3-day waiting period after you file your marriage intentions, under MGL c. 207, § 28. The license becomes valid three days after your application and stays active for 60 days. Both applicants must be 18 or older under MGL c. 207, § 7.
The city's marriage certificates page at cambridgema.gov marriage certificates has instructions on requesting copies. The process works the same for all certified copies, whether for marriages that happened recently or years ago.
If your situation requires skipping the waiting period, you can petition a Probate or District Court under MGL c. 207, § 30. The waiver fee is $195. Courts grant these only when there is a valid reason. They are not automatic approvals.
Cambridge also offers domestic partnership registration through the City Clerk. The fee is $35. This is separate from marriage and does not carry the same legal status, but it is a formal city record. Details are at cambridgema.gov domestic partnerships.
Cambridge Marriage Certificates and Copies
After a marriage ceremony, the officiant returns the signed license to the Cambridge City Clerk. The clerk records it and sends it to the state. That document becomes the official marriage certificate on file. Certified copies of Cambridge marriage certificates cost $15 each. If you request multiple copies at the same time, additional copies during the same transaction cost $6 each. This can save money if you need several copies at once.
For in-person requests, go to Room 103 at City Hall. Bring a photo ID. Staff can usually produce copies the same day. For mail requests, write to the clerk's address at 795 Massachusetts Avenue, Room 103, Cambridge MA 02139. Include the names of both parties, the date of the wedding, and the correct payment. Ask about accepted payment methods before mailing a check.
For records that the city does not hold, the Massachusetts RVRS at 150 Mount Vernon Street in Dorchester has statewide records from 1931 to the present. Fees are $20 in person, $32 by mail, or $54 through VitalChek. Call 617-740-2600 or visit mass.gov certificate ordering. For records from 1841 to 1930, the State Archives at 220 Morrissey Boulevard in Boston is your best option. Copies cost $3 each. Search the archive database at sec.state.ma.us vital records search.
Historical Cambridge Marriage Records
Cambridge has marriage records going back to the 1630s. That is nearly 400 years of recorded history. The oldest records are from the colonial period and include early town and church records. These older documents are typically held at the city clerk's office, the State Archives, or through historical societies.
FamilySearch has indexed Massachusetts vital records from 1841 to 1915 and makes them free to search online. The New England Historic Genealogical Society at americanancestors.org also holds extensive collections of early vital records for the Cambridge and greater Boston area. The Cambridge Public Library maintains a local history and genealogy collection that includes materials on Cambridge families going back several centuries.
For records from before 1841, the Cambridge City Clerk's office or historical society archives are the best starting points. Church records, particularly from early Congregational churches in the area, often filled the same role as civil records before formal state registration began.
Massachusetts Marriage Requirements
Massachusetts marriage law applies equally to Cambridge and every other city or town in the state. The full law is in MGL Chapter 207. Both parties must be 18 or older. Both must appear in person to file marriage intentions. A 3-day waiting period must pass. The license is then good for 60 days. There is no residency requirement anywhere in the state.
The state's guide for couples who plan to get married is at mass.gov getting married guide. It covers every step from filing intentions to returning the license after the ceremony. The overview of marriage law is at mass.gov marriage law. These pages are maintained by the state and stay current with any legislative changes.
