Brockton Marriage License Requirements

Both parties must appear in person at the Brockton City Clerk to apply for a marriage license. No residency requirement applies. The license fee is $55. This is higher than most other Massachusetts cities. Massachusetts law requires a 3-day waiting period under MGL c. 207, § 28. After the waiting period, the license is active for 60 days. If the wedding does not happen in that time, the license expires.

Both applicants must be at least 18 years old under MGL c. 207, § 7. Bring government-issued photo ID. If either party was previously married, you may need to provide details about how that marriage ended. Bring documentation if you have it.

If you need to skip the 3-day waiting period, you can apply for a waiver at a Probate or District Court under MGL c. 207, § 30. The waiver costs $195 and must be approved by a judge. It is not a guaranteed approval.

Historical Brockton Marriage Records

Brockton was incorporated as a city in 1881, but the city's records go back to 1821 when it was part of Bridgewater. Records from those earlier years may exist in a mix of formats. Some are in original ledger books; others have been microfilmed or transferred to archival holdings.

For records from 1841 to 1930, the Massachusetts State Archives at 220 Morrissey Boulevard in Boston is your best resource. Certified copies cost $3 each. You can search the online database at sec.state.ma.us vital records search.
